I started dancing at the Academy of Classical Ballet when I was 7 years old. At that time, ballet was just something I did because it was fun to skip around and be a “ballerina”, and because my mom just kept dropping me off at the studio several times a week despite my sporadic protests. But over my past 11 years at ACB, I have put away my childish dreams of skipping and twirling, and come to realize the intense beauty, difficulty, and amazing experience of the art of ballet.
The most amazing phenomenon of ballet to me is the ability it has to bring people from all walks of life together to share in the experience. All ages and backgrounds unite and bond during the hours of weekly classes and rehearsals, and draw strength from one another’s triumphs and weaknesses while trying to better execute the sometimes frustrating art of ballet. Dancers are also bound together not just through the relationships formed socially, but also through the silent power of the art, through the unified goals that each dancer shares. While moving in uniformity across the floor or at the barré, each student silently echoes a love for dance.
Like any hobby or sport, ballet allows for socialization, athletic exertion, and great personal satisfaction, but ballet is also unlike anything I have ever encountered. This is because ballet combines athleticism with art, art with music, people skills with personal challenges, and then fuses all of the above together into an intense smorgasbord of an experience. ACB is a great place to enjoy and heighten this experience because it is such a cultivating environment where each student is included, shaped individually and given equal chance to showcase their skill. I have taken classes at other area studios, but the teaching style of the ACB staff has brought me back. Even after my own difficult knee injuries, including knee surgery this past year, I have found myself returning to the studio for class at ACB.
So as I head off to college out of state this fall, I will carry my years of study, memories, triumphs and downfalls as a dancer, and I know that I have become a stronger dancer, and most definitely a stronger person from my experiences at ACB. - Heidi
